North Star Training Center welcomes Amanda Coulson-Drasner

19 year old Amanda, and her horse, Lanciano, just arrived from New York. Amanda has been riding since she was 4, starting with Western in Wyoming and switching to dressage at 11 years old. She competes with her horse, Lanciano, every summer. She tried to squeeze riding into her schedule, but that was not always possible while she lived in New York City and kept her horse upstate. In spite of her limited schedule, she was junior regional champion at fourth level in 2008, and reserve champion for the junior test. In 2009, she was regional champion at fourth level and reserve regional champion at Prix St. Georges. Amanda and Lanciano have shown minimally but successfully this summer at Intermediare I. Amanda hopes to get more riding time in now that she has moved to NC and begins her freshman year at Duke University.

Lynn and d'Artagnan make their North Carolina Grand Prix debut at Dressage in the Sandhills by winning all three classes with scores 67.45%, 66.6% and 65.95%.

New additions at NSTC

Terry Sosa and Wereina

Terry Weber Sosa purchased Wereina, a 6-year old Dutch warmblood mare, in February 2010 and she arrived at NSTC in early April. She is out of Diamond Hit by a mare named Sereina and was imported into the US from Holland in late 2009. Wereina is currently in training at NSTC and Terry is focusing on getting used to her new horse and establishing a relationship with her. She is a very willing, smart and keenly aware horse and we expect her to progress quickly in her training. Our goal for this year is to start getting Wereina out and about and getting some show experience with her.

Bonnie Efird and Magie Noir

Bonnie Efird moved her mare Magie Noir to NSTC at the end of March excited to have her mare near Elon University where she is a rising Junior. Bonnie has been riding since the ripe age of 6. She enjoys going to the barn everyday to spend time with "Maggie", and is thankful for the opportunity to board at NSTC. Bonnie and Maggie won the 2007 USEF FEI JR Gold Medal in Gladstone, NJ at the Festival of Champions, and competed at the FEI YR level at the 2008 NAJYRC in Parker, CO. Bonnie has shown Maggie up through Intermediaire I with scores up to 75% and has earned both her bronze & silver medals. Bonnie & Maggie have schooled up through Intermediare II. Bonnie competed Maggie in FL two winters in a row (2007-2008) and has had the opportunity of training with incredible trainers, to name a few- Diane Ritz, Anne Gribbons, Steffen Peters, Bo Jena, Michael Poulin, and Chris Hickey. Bonnie is extremely thankful for the support of her family and trainers for getting her where she is today. You can always spot Bonnie's Dad "the groom" taking care of Maggie at shows, while her mom is ringside with the lipstick and the water, always reminding her to SMILE!

Tick Info:
I've been using Frontline spray on their legs, arm pits, groin, tail head, etc. I just spray the areas like fly spray--nothing like the amount they recommend for a dog.

In addition I've been using three vials of ProTICall per horse--one up at the bridle path, one at the withers and one on the top of the rump. In addition to giving some tick protection, it also seems to have helped enormously with face flies.

I buy both products from www.countrysidepet.com. The ProTICall used to be sold as Defend Exspot, so they use both names on their website. So even though the website shows a picture of Defend Exspot, what arrives is ProTICall, made by Schering Plough. Their sales rep told my horse vet last year that it is safe for horses--it's the same Permethrin used in the stuff they sell for horses but at ~$11.00 for six vials, it is a lot cheaper!

I do use latex gloves when applying either one and only apply it monthly. Hope it works for you.

Caution that these products are not approved for horses (although the Schering Plough salesman said they could be used on horses).
